Stacked Plate Lamp

A Sculptural Glow with a Personal Twist

Sometimes the most unexpected objects make the most stylish results. In this new project by Don&Dandy, we’re transforming a few simple IKEA basics into a stunning, modern lamp that adds a warm glow and sculptural presence to any space. All it takes is a bit of stacking, a touch of color, and a clever use of materials.

This DIY is all about creating ambiance—with a functional piece that doubles as art.

Materials Needed

  • 4 round, chunky plates (we used ones from IKEA)
  • 1 medium-sized plastic salad bowl
  • 1 LED light ball
  • Strong multi-purpose glue
  • Montana PRIMER (plastic or universal, depending on surface)
  • Montana GOLD Line spray in dark red
  • Montana VARNISH spray (matt or gloss, your choice)
  • Drop sheet
  • Gloves
  • Mask

Step-by-Step Guide

Build the Base

Start by stacking the four chunky plates on top of one another to create the lamp’s base. Align them carefully and glue them together one by one using a strong, clear-drying adhesive. Let the glue set before moving to the next step.

Add the Bowl

Once the base is stable and dry, glue the medium salad bowl on top, open side facing up. This will act as your lamp’s soft, glowing shade. Let the structure dry thoroughly before priming.

Prime the Surface

Spray the entire lamp structure with Montana PRIMER to prepare the surface for color. Make sure to use the correct primer based on your materials—plastic, metal, or universal. Let the primer dry completely before applying color.

Add Your Color

Now for the fun part—color! Choose a rich tone from the Montana GOLD Line. We went with a deep dark red for a bold, contemporary finish. Apply thin, even coats, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next.

Varnish for Protection

Once your color is dry, seal everything with Montana VARNISH spray. This not only protects the paint but also gives the lamp a clean, finished look. Choose between a matte or gloss finish depending on the vibe you want.

Light It Up

Place your LED light ball into the bowl and switch it on. The result? A warm, glowing lamp with a minimalist shape and designer feel—all made from everyday items.

A Lamp That Lights Up More Than the Room

This project is perfect for those who love clean shapes, strong color, and creative re-use. The end result feels high-end, but it’s made entirely by hand—and with love. Use it as a side table feature, on a shelf, or as a glowing centerpiece for your next gathering.

Happy crafting!
