Custom Backgammon Set

A Classic Game with a Creative Twist

Take game night to the next level with a custom-painted backgammon set that’s portable, personal, and full of color. Using Montana GOLD, GRANIT Effect, MARBLE Effect, and ACRYLIC markers, this DIY project turns a plain wooden box into a stylish, travel-friendly game you’ll actually want to display.

Materials Needed

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Prep Your Workspace and Game Pieces

Cover your workspace with a drop sheet and make sure you’re wearing gloves and a mask. All wood surfaces should be clean and dry before you begin painting.

Step 2: Paint the Box and Game Board

Start by shaking your Montana GOLD cans for 2–3 minutes. Use your two main colors to spray the inside of the box where the backgammon grid will go. Carefully tape off triangles or create a stencil that seamlessly fits your box to recreate the classic backgammon pattern and spray in alternating colors.

Next, paint the outer frame of the box in GRANIT Effect to give the piece a clean, finished look.

Step 3: Paint the Tokens

You’ll need 30 tokens total—15 in each color. Use your two chosen Montana GOLD colors and spray the rings evenly, allowing them to dry between coats. Go slow and light to avoid overspray or pooling.

Then turn them around to cover the other side. Once dry, add texture by lightly misting with black and white MARBLE Effect spray. Let everything dry completely before handling.

Step 4: Create Custom Dices

Take two plain wooden cubes and apply a layer of Montana GRANIT Effect spray in your choice of color (we used grey). Once dry, use a Montana ACRYLIC Marker to draw the dots for each number side. The textured stone-like finish gives a rugged, tactile feel to your handmade dice.

A Game Set with Style

And just like that, your portable backgammon set is complete—totally customized, perfectly compact, and ready to bring to parks, parties, or cozy nights in. With the help of Montana Cans, you’ve turned a timeless game into a design piece that’s just as fun to look at as it is to play.

Happy crafting—and may the best player win.
