Gradient Rainbow Planters

Bringing Color and Life Into Your Space

There’s something magical about adding both color and greenery to a room—it instantly feels fresher, happier, and more alive. This project combines the two by transforming a simple wooden shelf and a collection of plain planters into a vibrant rainbow display. The shelf itself is softened with a two-tone finish in beige and light blue, while the planters each get their own unique gradient in matching color families. The result is a modern, playful centerpiece that doubles as storage for your favorite plants. This is also our first project with the newly designed Montana Cans packaging which we’re happy is finally here.

Materials Needed

  • A plain wooden shelf
  • A collection of planters (ceramic or plastic—any shape works!)
  • Sandpaper
  • Montana Universal PRIMER for shelf and planters
  • Montana GOLD Line spray paints your favorite rainbow colors
  • Drop sheet, gloves, and mask
  • A selection of plants, moss, or herbs for styling

Step-by-Step Guide

Prepare the Shelf

Before painting, lightly sand the surface of your shelf to smooth it out and remove any existing coatings. Wipe away any dust and make sure the surface is clean and dry. Spray a thin, even coat of Montana Universal PRIMER across the entire shelf to ensure a strong foundation for your color. Let it dry fully.

Once primed, divide the shelf visually into two halves. Spray one half in a soft beige tone and the other in light blue. Apply the colors in thin, overlapping layers for even coverage, allowing each coat to dry before adding another. This subtle two-tone effect creates a calm backdrop for the more colorful planters to come.

Prime the Planters

No matter what material your planters are made of—plastic or ceramic—priming them first will make a big difference. Sand lightly if necessary, then apply a layer of Montana Universal PRIMER. This not only improves adhesion but also ensures that the final gradient colors appear bright and smooth. Let the primer dry completely before moving on.

Spray the Gradient Colors

Now for the fun part: creating the rainbow! Work in sets of three matching shades for each pot. For warm tones, use yellow, orange, and red. For a natural palette, try yellow, light green, and dark green. For cooler tones, go with light blue, dark blue, and purple.

Hold the can about 20–30 cm from the surface and begin with the lightest shade, or reverse. Spray around the base, then move upward with your medium tone, blending where the colors meet. Finish with the darkest shade at the top rim, softly overlapping into the middle tone for a smooth transition. Rotate the pot as you spray to keep the gradient even all the way around. Allow each pot to dry before continuing to the next set.

Assemble and Style

Once everything is dry, it’s time to put the look together. Place your newly painted planters on the shelf, letting the colors flow naturally from warm to cool. Add your favorite plants—think trailing greenery, leafy houseplants, or bright spring flowers. For extra texture, tuck in moss or small decorative stones around the base of the plants.

A Colorful Home Accent

In just a few simple steps, you’ve created a vibrant, modern shelf that’s as much a decorative statement as it is a practical plant display. The beige and blue base tones balance the overall look, while the gradient planters add joy, creativity, and a splash of rainbow energy to your interior.

This project is approachable for beginners but gives professional-looking results that can brighten any living room, kitchen, or office. It’s proof that with a little color and creativity, everyday objects can become extraordinary.

Happy crafting, and may your new rainbow shelf bring brightness and life to your space!
