Sculptural Knot Objects

Shape, Spray, Transform — A Soft Material Becomes a Statement

Sometimes the most unexpected materials create the most striking objects. In this DIY, a simple construction hose is transformed into a sculptural knot—fluid, minimal, and surprisingly elegant.

By shaping the hose into a three-dimensional form and finishing it with luminous metallic spray paints, you create a design object that feels both industrial and refined. Placed on a shelf, coffee table, or console, it adds a subtle statement and a touch of personality to any living space.

This project is quick, tactile, and all about form, color, and transformation.

Step-by-Step Guide

Shape Your Knot

Start by forming your hose into a sculptural knot. You can go for a classic loop, a loose infinity shape, or a more complex intertwined structure.

Keep the curves smooth and balanced—this is where your object gets its character. Adjust the proportions until it feels visually pleasing from different angles. The goal is a shape that looks effortless yet intentional.

Prepare the Surface

Set up your workspace with a drop sheet and wear gloves and a mask. Wipe down the hose to remove any dust or residue.

Apply a thin, even layer of Montana Universal PRIMER across the entire surface. This helps the paint adhere better and creates a clean base for the metallic finish. Let it dry completely before moving on.

Apply Metallic Color

Choose one metallic tone for a minimal look, or combine several for a more expressive piece.

Spray the knot using light, even coats. You can:

• Keep it monochrome in Metallic Gold or Champagne for a soft, elegant feel

• Blend Copper and Green for a richer, more artistic effect

Allow each layer of paint to dry before adding another to build depth and a smooth finish.

Refine and Layer

Step back and observe your piece. Add a second coat where needed or lightly layer another metallic shade to create subtle variation if you want.

The Montana Cans Metallic paints catch light beautifully, so even small tonal differences will enhance the three-dimensional form.

Let It Dry

Leave the object to dry fully before moving or placing it. This ensures a clean, durable finish and keeps the surface free from marks.

A Simple Object, Reimagined

This DIY sculptural knot shows how an everyday material can become a design piece with just a few thoughtful steps. The contrast between the soft, flexible hose and the polished metallic finish creates something unexpected—playful yet refined.

Whether styled on its own or combined with books and ceramics, it brings shape, light, and personality into your space.

An easy, quick project—with a surprisingly elevated result.
